  • Marta and Emma

Wednesday-Friday Tony and I went out and did some surveys on St Catherine street. We talked with Marta on Wednesday and Emma on Friday, they were both sitting in the same spot on two different days, and Tony and I decided to ask them about Jesus. They were very similar with a vague catholic upbringing, so they had some ideas of who God might be but they had no clue the condition of their soul or where they would go if they died. We talked for at least an hour with each of them, sharing the gospel with them, that you cannot do anything to pay for your sins and you will be eternally separated from God if your sins aren’t paid, but God paid for our sins with His Son Jesus. We told them about what God tell us we need to do to have a relationship with Him. Tony asked would you like to do that now? And they said yes, they prayed to Jesus and asked Him to forgive their sins. The exciting part is the questions after, questions that we don’t lead at all, we just ask. Tony asked, “So where is Jesus right now?” He’s in my heart, “Where are your sins?” They’re gone, they’re forgiven “Where would you be if you died this moment?” Heaven. “Why?” Because Jesus forgave my sins.

Marta was a woman that is here from the Dominican republic, she’s here to study and immigrate here. Emma is from New Brunswick, she’s studying French in Trois Rivieres, she was just in Montreal visiting. It was 3:30 when we met her and she was just waiting for her train at 6:00 God had divinely appointed these meetings.

  • Saturday night, Fernando and Saini

Tonight was a true work of the Holy Spirit, no one on our team could claim any recognition to the work that was done. We went out onto Saint Catherine Street tonight, our first Saturday night of the year.

As I was setting up the sketch board a few people asked what it was about, Tony told them straight up that it was about Jesus and asked them about the condition of their souls. As he spoke a few people stopped to listen. He ended and they left but there was one guy in particular who Tony wasn’t specifically talking to, he just listened, then he left when Tony was done. Then Laurie said, “What about him” so Ziggy went to go talk to him, Ziggy met Fernando and then introduced him to Tony and they had a long conversation.

During their conversation I decided to do some surveys. I commented specifically on what a slow night it was, there was no action, so few people, and nobody wanted to stop for a survey, he was a Hindu, he thinks Jesus was a prophet, he believes there’s a heaven and a hell, but he had no clear sense where he would be if he died, and he didn’t want to know.

I told him that I believe you can know where you’ll be when you die. “Do you believe we have a creator?” He said yes. “What do you think is the purpose of life?” He said to be good and stuff like that. I told him that God actually created us to have a relationship with Him, but there’s a problem. “Do you think God is perfect?” He said yes. “Are you perfect?” He said no. I drew a diagram of two cliffs, “Since God is perfect, and we are not, this separates us from God. How do you think you’ll get to God?” He said I don’t know. I drew a latter trying to reach from us to God, we try to be good, go to a place of worship and stuff like that, but the latter only reaches half way. I said, “No matter how much good you do, you’ll never be good enough, and there’s a barrier between us and God and in God’s eyes it’s called sin. Sin is a big problem, because we have offended God, God says that the payment of sin is death, and there is no forgiveness without blood, but you know what, not even your death or your blood will pay for you sin, it’s impossible, you will be separated from God forever without paying for your sins, so how will you pay for your sins?” he said…I don’t know. “That’s why God sent His Son Jesus. Jesus died on the cross to pay for your sins. When they buried Jesus His tomb was guarded by 16-20 roman soldiers, these soldiers vowed their life to the roman army that if they abandoned post they would be killed without question, because what good are they if they abandon post? But before Jesus died He promised in three days He would raise from the dead. And in three days He did, and those soldiers ran, and Jesus was found to be alive, even the people that hated Jesus knew that He was alive. So what does this mean for you and I? Jesus is alive and He is offering to forgive your sins so that you can have a relationship with God and have the promise of eternal life.” I don’t know how the whole conversation went, but I asked him, “Do you realize that you have sinned against God?” yes, “And do you realize that you without paying for that sin you will be separated from God forever?” yes, “And do you realize that you can never pay for your sins?” yes. I showed him 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10. I told him that Jesus will return, and there will be two options, the people who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, but for those who do believe it will be a beautiful day and we will marvel at Him and worship and have an eternal life with Him. Then I showed him John 3:16-17 and read it to him with his name in place saying, “For God so loved Saini, that He gave His one and only Son, that if Saini believes in Jesus he shall not perish but Saini will have eternal life.” I asked, “Is there anything stopping you from believing in Jesus and giving your life to Him?” No, “would you like to do that now?” now? “Yeah” yeah I do. I told him that we can talk to God anytime by praying to Him, “would you like to pray to God and ask Him to forgive your sins?” yeah, but I don’t know how to pray. I said then we’ll pray together, I prayed to God and told Saini that if he agrees that he could just repeat me, and he did, and Saini asked Jesus to forgive his sins. I will continue to meet and talk with him.

Meanwhile, Tony was still in the same conversation with Fernando and Ziggy, and then Fernando prayed to give his life to Jesus as well. Tony will continue to meet and talk with Fernando.

We didn’t even preach before two people gave their lives to Jesus tonight. I preached one message after that and then we decided to pack up. The Holy Spirit answered our prayers, to prepare the ground before us and bring along people to us who are ready…and that’s what He did.

  • whatever you want

Well I’ve been here in Montreal exactly 1 full week now. It went by fast but at the same time it feels like I’ve been here a month.

This has been a great week to start the summer with. I wish I could share with you all the great conversations I’ve had with the people here.

God has given me a new boldness and passion for sharing the gospel with the people here.

I’ll share with you a realization that God has given me. People here in Montreal believe whatever they want. The reason that everybody here believes whatever they want is because nobody has ever told them it’s wrong.

Last year I had a different attitude than I do this year. Last year if someone came to me saying, “I believe Jesus was an alien from outer space and he’s not really God but he’s just another alien like you and I…” I would say, “ok, but I believe that Jesus is God, he’s not an alien, and He claimed to be the only way to God.” Just looking at that response there’s nothing wrong, I’ve moved on from his claims and shared the gospel. But really that approach does nothing for him, I’ve gotten the gospel to his ears, but in that presentation it only appears that his belief is as good as mine. He walks away a better alien and I walk away a better Christian.

Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives us an authority and discernment to share the gospel to the lost people that He seeks. Many people have stepped back from this authority due to the cultural pressure that says, “Who are you to tell me I’m wrong, and you’re not better than me.”

With a renewed confidence in Jesus I am able to respond to the alien, “no, that’s wrong, Jesus is God, He created you...” and so on. It’s an approach that has a healthy tension. Without tension you can be sure that something is not in place. When he hears this gospel it doesn’t just get to his ears but it stays with him and will challenge him, for the first time in his life, somebody has challenged his beliefs, somebody has told him that he’s believing a lie.
